Weblog Post #1 - The Auto-Biography

My name is Jonathan Fairbanks McVerry. I was born on August 22 1981 in the Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg. I grew up on the other side of Broadhead Creek in Stroudsburg.
I am the youngest of two sisters and a brother. They all are married and have children. We are all Penn State graduates and could not be prouder. My parents are from New England and raised us as big-time New England sports fans.
I graduated from Penn State last May with a degree in journalism and a minor in English. In between then and starting graduate school at Shippensburg University in January, I worked as a news reporter for the Sun-Gazette in Williamsport, home of the Little League World Series.

My goal is to attain a masters in communications studies at SU and hopefully one day move on to the PhD level and eventually teach at a university as a professor. In the mean time I look forward to enjoying my time in Shippensburg. Starting next week I will have a morning slot on the university radio station (WSYC, 88.7) and I have already started writing free-lance articles for the Shippensburg News-Chronicle.
I look forward to attending some Shippensburg sports events and other entertainment events. I made it a point at Penn State to see a game of every sport. I made it to most of them, the most interesting being football, obviously, ice hockey and women’s rugby.
In my spare time I enjoy almost every facet of music. I have a makeshift studio in my apartment and often record music for fun. My influences range from Pearl Jam and R.E.M. to Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones. I enjoy seeing concerts too. My best friend, girlfriend and I are driving to Memphis for Spring Break to see 311. It is on March 11th (311 Day) and the band performs a 6-hour show that will surely be one for the ages.

Other than that, I am looking forward to putting together this blog. I have always been interested in writing, creating and having people read and respond. It was my interest in creative writing that got me pushed into the direction of journalism. In the end I realized journalism as a 40+ hour a week job is not for me, but in smaller doses and looking at it from a broader scale might do the trick.
